SK Hynix said it will begin mass production of LPDDR6 memory based on its latest 1c, or 10nm-class, DRAM process in the second half of this year. The company recently completed validation of the 1c dies and will use the first half of the year to prepare for mass production.
The company has developed 16-gigabit LPDDR6 chips for smartphones and tablets that support on-device AI. According to SK hynix, bandwidth-intensive AI tasks will process data 33% faster than with LPDDR5X. The new memory has a base operating speed of 10.7Gbps.
SK hynix said its 1c LPDDR6 RAM will support longer battery life and improved multitasking performance in future devices.
Faster Speeds and Lower Power Use
SK Hynix said its 1c LPDDR6 RAM is faster and more efficient than older memory standards. The company said LPDDR6 delivers at least 20% better power efficiency than the previous RAM standard.
It said this improvement comes from two features that adjust performance based on workload demand: sub-channel structure and DVFS.
The sub-channel structure allows some data paths to remain dormant when additional bandwidth is not needed. DVFS, or Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling, lowers operating frequency and voltage during light workloads, then raises them again for more demanding tasks such as AI processing and gaming.
