Two students have developed a mobile application aimed at helping passengers of Punjab’s electric bus service access route and schedule information, addressing difficulties commuters face in finding accurate bus timings.
One of the developers, Muhammad Ghayas, said the idea came after a personal experience when he waited at a bus stop for nearly half an hour, only to learn that the last bus on his route had already left. He said this prompted him and his colleague to create a solution that could provide timely updates to passengers.
According to the developers, the application provides information on electric bus routes, stops and departure timings. It also sends notifications to users in case of any changes in schedules or routes. Ghayas said the app uses publicly available data and presents it in a simple format. He added that it can also function without internet access.
The application has not yet been released on the Play Store and is currently available through a website. The developers said the app received significant attention after being shared on Instagram, where it was viewed by more than 50,000 users within two days and downloaded by over 500 people.
Co-developer Rizwan Ali said the project is still in its early stages and does not currently include live tracking of buses. He added that integrating such a feature would require coordination with relevant government authorities.
The students said they have reached out to the Punjab Chief Minister, the Punjab Transport Authority and the Punjab Information Technology Board to support further development of the application, including the addition of live tracking.
They added that the app currently covers routes in six to seven major cities, while users from other cities have also requested inclusion of their routes.
