Citizens Protest Heavy Traffic Fines During Eid

The Lahore traffic police launched a major crackdown on the third day of Eid, setting up checkpoints on major roads and issuing fines to motorists, drawing complaints from citizens who said the move disrupted festive outings.

Traffic wardens placed barriers on key roads, including The Mall, Jail Road, Main Boulevard, Gulberg, Canal Road, and CBD Boulevard, stopping cars and motorcycles to check documents and issue tickets for violations.

Witnesses said several families visiting popular recreational spots were stopped and fined.

In the Central Business District (CBD) area, police blocked both sides of the road with barriers and slowed traffic to intercept motorists.

Many families had gathered there to enjoy the 4.5-kilometre signal-free smart road, known for its green belts, solar-powered sidewalks, and dedicated cycling lanes.

Checkpoints were also set up at Liberty Roundabout, Gulberg’s main boulevards, and near Jilani Park on Jail Road, where hundreds of families were heading to celebrate Eid.

Similar enforcement actions were reported on The Mall near Lahore Zoo, another popular destination for families during holidays.

Some citizens criticised the strict enforcement, alleging that authorities focused more on generating revenue than managing traffic.

Reports indicate that the Lahore traffic police collected Rs12.55 billion in revenue within two and a half months, including Rs6.2 billion from traffic violation fines.

A traffic police spokesperson said authorities did not impose fines on the first day of Eid, but enforcement resumed later to ensure compliance with traffic laws.
