Telecom companies have activated 5G sites near key buildings and central hubs in Islamabad and other parts of Pakistan, according to officials from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). The rollout covers sensitive areas, including the Red Zone, Blue Area, and Parliament Lodges, with multiple 5G sites now operational across these sectors.
Jazz has activated 180 5G sites nationwide, while Zong has brought 150 sites online, PTA sources told ProPakistani.
Ufone is expected to activate its sites after importing the required 5G equipment and devices from abroad. Under license terms, telecom operators are required to update their coverage details on their official websites to reflect the new 5G services.
Alongside the 5G rollout, improvements in 4G services are also expected. Following the spectrum auction, 4G download speeds have been capped at 20 Mbps, while initial 5G speeds have been set at 50 Mbps. However, Apple and Samsung have yet to release 5G patches for their devices, limiting the immediate availability of full 5G functionality for users.
A total of 103 mobile brands have activated 5G on 2,254 devices, providing early access to users. However, a full 5G experience will depend on upcoming software updates from mobile manufacturers.
PTA officials said that stabilizing the 5G network may take approximately two years as deployment continues across the country.
In the coming months, telecom operators are expected to receive shipments of 5G equipment. Once fully deployed, noticeable improvements in 4G service are projected within five to six months. PTA recently completed the 5G spectrum auction, selling 480 MHz out of a total 597 MHz available for allocation.
