The 2026 Pakistan Super League (PSL 11) season has introduced a major change to its playing conditions, allowing captains to submit two different team sheets before the toss.
The move is aimed at reducing the impact of the coin toss and was introduced during the opening match in Lahore between Lahore Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen.
Before the toss, both captains, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Marnus Labuschagne, submitted two separate lineups to the match referee. Each captain finalized their playing XI only after the toss result was known.
This change falls under Clause 1.2.1 of the PSL’s playing conditions. According to the rule, each captain may submit two different XIs in writing before the toss. Each lineup must include 11 players and up to four substitute fielders.
After the toss, the captain must confirm one lineup by signing the selected team sheet. Once finalized, no player in the playing XI can be changed without the consent of the opposing captain.
The rule is seen as a progressive step to reduce the advantage of winning the toss, especially in night matches where dew can significantly affect conditions. Dew often makes the ball slippery, making it harder for spinners to grip and reducing their effectiveness in the second innings.
With this rule, teams can adjust their lineup based on match conditions. A team batting first may choose an extra fast bowler instead of a spinner, while a team bowling second can strengthen its batting lineup.
In the opening match, however, dew did not play a role. Wind and cloud cover kept conditions dry throughout the game.
On the field, Lahore Qalandars started their title defense with a dominant 69-run win over Hyderabad Kingsmen.
Batting first, the Qalandars scored 199 for six in 20 overs. Fakhar Zaman led the innings with 53 off 39 balls, hitting ten boundaries. Mohammad Naeem added 30 off 19 balls, while Haseebullah Khan remained unbeaten on 40 off 28 deliveries. Sikandar Raza contributed a quick 24 off 10 balls to finish the innings strongly.
In response, Hyderabad Kingsmen were bowled out for 130. Lahore’s pace attack led the effort, with Haris Rauf, Ubaid Shah, Shaheen Afridi, and Mustafizur Rahman all performing well. Sikandar Raza also contributed with the ball.
