Immigration New Zealand has announced an important update to the visa application process for family members of temporary visa holders. From June 1, 2026, partners and children applying for visas will submit their applications through an upgraded Immigration Online system.
The change aims to simplify the process and make it easier for families applying together to manage their visa applications.
Visa Types Included in the Update
The new system will handle several visa categories for family members of temporary visa holders, including:
- Visitor visas for partners or children
- Student visas for dependent children
- Work visas for partners of temporary visa holders
These visa applications will now be processed through the same upgraded platform already used for several other visa types.
Automatic Linking of Family Applications
One of the key improvements in the new system is the automatic linking of family applications.
Under the updated platform:
A partner’s visa application will automatically connect to the main applicant’s file
Children’s visa applications will also be linked to their parents’ records
This feature is expected to help immigration officers review related applications more efficiently and reduce delays in processing.
Gradual Expansion of the Online System
The upgraded platform is part of a broader effort by Immigration New Zealand to modernize the visa application process.
Several visa types are already processed through the system, including:
- Accredited Employer Work Visa
- Permanent Resident Visa
- Some visitor visas
- Some student visas
Authorities say the goal is to make visa applications clearer, faster, and easier for applicants.
What Happens to Existing Applications
Applications already submitted through the current system will continue to be processed normally.
Applicants who have started but not yet submitted an application can either:
- Complete the process in the current system, or
- Start a new application using the upgraded Immigration Online platform after June 1, 2026.
More details about the transition process are expected closer to the implementation date.
A Simpler Process for Families
Immigration officials say the updated system will help families avoid confusion when submitting documents and ensure applications are reviewed together.
By linking related applications under one platform, authorities expect faster decisions and a smoother visa process for families planning to live, study, or work in New Zealand.
