Lionel Messi Leads Argentina to Win in Emotional Home Farewell

Lionel Messi delivered a memorable performance as Argentina defeated Zambia 5-0 at La Bombonera, in what is widely expected to be his final match on home soil before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 38-year-old captain, making his first start of the March international window after appearing as a halftime substitute against Mauritania, made an immediate impact.

Messi assisted Julian Alvarez for Argentina’s opening goal in the fourth minute. He then got on the scoresheet himself just before halftime, scoring his 116th international goal and the 902nd of his career to extend Argentina’s lead.

In the second half, Argentina was awarded a penalty, but Messi chose to hand the chance to veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi, who is set to retire from international football after the World Cup. Otamendi converted and later reflected on his career.

“There is no greater satisfaction than wearing the national team jersey. I am very happy to have had this send-off at home,” Otamendi said.

Argentina completed the rout with an own goal from Zambia and a strike by Valentin Barco.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni praised the team’s response following a below-par performance against Mauritania but warned that improvements are needed before naming the final 26-man squad.

Defender Cristian Romero emphasized the importance of unity as Argentina turns its focus to defending its World Cup title.
