Goods transporters have called an emergency joint meeting today after the recent increase in petroleum product prices, particularly diesel, sparked strong reactions within the transport sector.
According to sources, the meeting will be chaired by Nabeel Mahmood, who said transporters will discuss the option of halting vehicles in response to the rising operational costs.
Transport leaders are also expected to consider a 60 to 65 percent increase in freight charges to offset the sharp rise in diesel prices.
Mahmood said the government has already imposed heavy taxes on the transport sector, placing significant financial pressure on transporters.
He added that diesel prices had already reached a level where operating transport vehicles had become extremely difficult.
According to Mahmood, the situation has also affected import and export cargo operations at ports, where loading and delivery systems are already under strain.
Transporters will decide their future course of action after consultations during the meeting. Sector representatives say further fuel price increases could worsen the challenges facing the transport industry and disrupt supply chains.
