Meta is testing a new paid subscription model for Instagram that introduces additional features, including the ability to view stories without appearing on the viewer list.
The company confirmed the development to FOX Local, stating that the test began earlier this year in select markets.
New Features in the Paid Model
One of the main features under testing allows users to watch Instagram Stories anonymously. This means viewers can access content without their names appearing in the list of viewers.
The subscription also includes several other tools. Users can create unlimited audience lists for Stories, beyond the current Close Friends limit. The model also introduces the ability to see how many times a story has been rewatched.
Additional features include the option to highlight one story per week, send animated “super hearts” to show engagement, extend story visibility for another 24 hours, and search through the story viewer list instead of scrolling manually.
Meta’s Response
A Meta spokesperson said the company began testing the paid model in February across a limited number of countries. The goal is to explore ways to enhance how users interact with its platforms while keeping the main experience free.
The company added that the test is part of ongoing efforts to understand which premium features users find most useful.
Testing Locations Remain Unconfirmed
Meta has not officially disclosed the countries where the feature is being tested. However, reports indicate that trials are taking place in Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines.
Broader Context
The testing comes during a period of increased legal scrutiny for Meta. In one case in New Mexico, a jury found that the company harmed children’s mental health and safety, violating state law.
In a separate case in California, a jury ruled that Meta and YouTube contributed to addictive platform use among young users. The decision resulted in financial compensation for a plaintiff who said prolonged social media use affected her mental health.
