PM Shehbaz Forms War Council to Protect Economy From Gulf Crisis

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has constituted a National Coordination and Management Council (NCMC) to manage the economic and internal security fallout from the Middle East war.

The newly formed council will oversee economic, financial, trade, and security-related policy responses.

NCMC will monitor internal security risks, including the possibility of displacement and refugee inflows, while also handling narrative management and efforts to counter disinformation.

The body is expected to replace multiple parallel committees that had been working separately over the past month.

The executive committee is being co-chaired by Ahad Khan Cheema and Lt General Zafar Iqbal, with representation from federal ministries, provincial governments, and special areas.

In its first meeting, the committee approved the export of surplus furnace oil after ensuring domestic energy requirements were fully accounted for, following concerns raised by local refineries over limited storage capacity.

The body will also closely monitor foreign exchange reserves, the rupee, commodity flows, freight costs, and remittance trends through real-time digital dashboards.

Beyond immediate crisis management, the council has been tasked with trade diversification, securing alternate import sources, maintaining strategic fuel reserves, and preparing targeted subsidy plans for low-income families.
