The Government of Punjab has enforced new rules for crime scene units to strengthen forensic investigations and evidence handling across the province.
Under the updated framework, the Punjab Forensic Science Agency will establish divisional and district-level crime scene units to improve response and investigation standards.
Immediate response and scene security
The rules assign investigating officers the responsibility to promptly reach crime scenes, including cases of murder, suicide, and sexual assault.
Meanwhile, police and law enforcement agencies must secure the crime scene to prevent contamination of evidence.
Strict evidence handling protocols
Officials are now required to capture complete photos and videos, prepare sketches, and maintain written records of the scene. The rules also introduce strict procedures for packaging and sealing evidence, with each item clearly labeled with:
- Crime scene number
- Sample number
- Date and time
- Detailed description
Evidence must be handed over to the relevant authorities with proper receipts, while witness signatures during transfer have been made mandatory.
Secure transportation and storage
The policy also mandates dedicated vehicles and security arrangements for transporting evidence. Additionally, collection units at divisional and district levels will ensure proper storage and preservation.
The move aims to enhance transparency, improve conviction rates, and strengthen forensic standards in criminal investigations across Punjab.
