Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan chaired a meeting of the National Highway Authority Punjab region, where ongoing and proposed road projects were reviewed and key decisions approved.
During the meeting, the minister said upgrading the GT Road to motorway standards remains a priority, adding that increasing traffic pressure on national highways must be managed effectively.
He said the GT Road generates significant revenue and stressed the need to ensure improved facilities for road users. Abdul Aleem Khan directed NHA officials to implement phased improvements on the GT Road.
He also instructed that all U-turns be constructed according to international standards to ensure smooth traffic flow. The minister emphasized the need to build pedestrian bridges and crossings for motorcyclists, stating that children, women and other road users should not face difficulties while crossing roads.
He further directed that, where possible, government land should be utilized during land acquisition to minimize costs. The meeting also reviewed proposals related to the beautification of the GT Road, including the development of green areas, improved lighting and landscaping.
Officials also decided to install barriers to discourage unsafe road crossings by pedestrians. The meeting was attended by the federal secretary for communications, the NHA chairman and other senior officials, while representatives from the private construction sector also presented recommendations for the improvement of the GT Road.
