Punjab Govt Takes Action Against Industrial Pollution

The Punjab Environment Department has directed the establishment of environmental buffer zones around industrial areas across the province to control pollution.

The orders were issued by Dr Imran Hamid Sheikh, making it mandatory to develop green buffer zones around industrial estates to reduce the impact of smoke and harmful gases emitted by factories.

Legal Framework and Objective

The directive has been issued under the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act 1997, aiming to curb industrial pollution and protect public health.

Officials said industrial pollution has become a serious risk to human health, and strict action will be taken against violations of environmental laws.

Strict Monitoring and Enforcement

Authorities warned that industries failing to carry out plantation in designated areas will face action. Cutting trees without permission has also been banned.

Encroachments or damage to green belts will not be tolerated, and institutions that fail to meet plantation targets will be held accountable.

Implementation Measures

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has directed field teams to ensure strict implementation of the orders. The GIS department has been assigned mapping responsibilities to monitor industrial zones effectively.

Officials said the initiative aims to improve environmental conditions while maintaining a balance between industrial growth and public health.
