Water and sanitation agencies (WASAs) across Punjab have installed 696 fire hydrants in 41 districts over the past three months to improve emergency response capabilities.
The initiative follows a major fire incident at Gul Plaza in Karachi, which exposed gaps in firefighting infrastructure.
Expansion of Firefighting Network
According to officials, more than 1,150 hydrants are planned across the province. While WASAs have completed 696 installations, the remaining units will be installed by the Local Government Department of Punjab.
The hydrants have been strategically placed in commercial centres and densely populated areas to ensure quicker response during emergencies.
Operational Support and Preparedness
The Rescue 1122 will operate the hydrants during fire incidents. Authorities have also conducted mock drills in collaboration with Rescue 1122 across all 41 districts to enhance preparedness.
Officials said the move is part of broader efforts to improve urban safety infrastructure and reduce fire risks in major cities and towns.
