Karachi Reopens Parts of Newly Constructed Major Road

Commuters in Karachi can expect smoother travel after authorities reopened several key sections of University Road, marking significant progress on the long-running road improvement project.

According to officials, the newly completed carriageways between Hassan Square and Jail Road have been opened in both directions, allowing uninterrupted traffic flow along one of the city’s busiest corridors.

Authorities have also reopened the road connecting Jail Road to Mazar-e-Quaid, further improving connectivity for motorists traveling through central Karachi.

The latest openings are expected to reduce congestion on surrounding roads and improve overall traffic movement in the area, which has faced prolonged disruptions due to construction work.

Officials noted that the Safari Park to NIPA section had already been completed and opened earlier, while construction continues on the remaining stretch between Safora and Mazar-e-Quaid.

The University Road rehabilitation project resumed in April 2026 after the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) officially took over construction of the long-delayed corridor.

During a visit to the project earlier this year, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab were briefed on the progress by FWO officials. The organization has been tasked with completing the section from Islamia College to the Meteorological Department, with work currently underway.

Officials have expressed confidence that construction will continue at an accelerated pace, with more sections expected to be completed and opened to traffic in the coming months.
