The Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA) has urged the government and internet service providers to ensure uninterrupted, high-speed internet across the country, warning that ongoing connectivity issues are undermining the digital economy.
In a statement, PAFLA emphasized that reliable internet access is essential for economic stability, particularly for Pakistan’s growing freelance and gig economy sectors. The association noted that persistent digital challenges are affecting the ability of workers to meet international demands.
PAFLA Chairman Ibrahim Amin said slow internet speeds are significantly impacting freelancers and gig workers nationwide. According to him, reduced speeds have lowered productivity and harmed the global ranking and reputation of Pakistani freelancers. He added that the issue is becoming more serious as more workers depend on high-speed internet to meet deadlines for international clients.
The situation has worsened due to frequent power outages combined with internet disruptions. PAFLA said these challenges have created difficult working conditions for freelancers, as well as workers in ride-hailing and food delivery services. Many have reported declining earnings, as connectivity issues and delays make it harder to complete tasks on time.
PAFLA also pointed to recent submarine cable repair work as a factor that has negatively affected internet speed and quality across Pakistan. In response, the association has called on the government to introduce satellite internet solutions as an alternative. It said such systems could help maintain service continuity during undersea cable faults and provide greater stability for the country’s digital workforce.
Pakistan currently has more than 2.3 million freelancers, making it one of the leading countries globally in freelancing, according to the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Despite ongoing connectivity issues, freelancers have contributed $800 million in foreign exchange.
PAFLA noted that government initiatives and organizational support have played a key role in training new freelancers and expanding the sector. Looking ahead, freelancers and content creators are hopeful that the introduction of 5G technology will improve productivity and further strengthen Pakistan’s economic growth.
