Pakistan Faces Peak-Hour Power Shortfall as Hydropower Output Stays Low

Pakistan continued to face an electricity shortfall during peak hours as lower water demand from provinces limited hydropower generation, according to the Power Division.

Hydropower generation reached 4,950 megawatts during peak hours last night, significantly below the total installed capacity of 11,500 megawatts. Power division’s spokesperson said production remains around 6,000 megawatts below capacity due to reduced water releases.

Authorities maintained that improved grid stability allowed the transmission of 400 megawatts from southern regions to central areas, helping manage supply pressures.

Power distribution companies implemented load management of up to two to two and a half hours during peak demand hours as electricity consumption increased. Officials clarified that economic load management on high-loss feeders will continue as per policy, and it is separate from peak time load management measures.

The Power Division said that improved availability of liquefied natural gas could help eliminate peak time load management. Currently, around 5,500 megawatts of generation capacity remains idle due to the shortage of LNG supply.

Authorities urged consumers to conserve electricity during night hours, as rising demand combined with global energy conditions and lower water demand continues to create supply gaps.
