The Ministry of IT and Telecom has written to power distribution companies across the country, directing them to prioritize express feeders for critical telecom infrastructure amid growing concerns over service disruptions.
Pakistan’s telecom networks are facing increasing strain due to prolonged power outages and rising fuel costs, with mobile service quality beginning to deteriorate in several areas.
In response, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has proposed urgent measures, including excluding telecom infrastructure from load shedding schedules and ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply to telecom towers through dedicated express feeders.
Telecom operators are currently relying on backup power systems to maintain services, but these are becoming unsustainable as outages lengthen and fuel reserves deplete more quickly. The rising cost of petroleum has further increased operational expenses, adding pressure on network performance nationwide.
The regulator has also recommended shifting the telecom sector to an industrial electricity tariff to reduce costs and improve service reliability. Officials have warned that without timely intervention, service continuity could weaken further, leading to more frequent disruptions for users.
The ministry has emphasized the need for immediate coordination, noting that early signs of network degradation have already emerged due to ongoing power shortages.
