The Universal Service Fund (USF) is preparing to launch its Next Generation Broadband for Sustainable Development (NG-BSD) initiative aimed at expanding internet access in underserved regions of Pakistan.
Under the program, broadband connectivity will be introduced in three districts—Bahawalpur, Mirpurkhas, and Kolai Palas—each treated as a separate package for the upcoming bidding process.
The initiative is designed to improve digital access in areas where reliable internet services remain limited, with the aim of supporting education, healthcare, and economic activity through better connectivity.
USF will conduct the project through a reverse auction model, where qualified bidders will compete to deliver services at the lowest subsidy requirement. The selected operators will receive government support to help build and operate broadband infrastructure in these regions.
To participate, companies must meet eligibility requirements, including valid tax registration such as NTN and sales tax status. Full details of the bidding process, timelines, and technical requirements are available on the USF website.
As part of the schedule, bids for the Bahawalpur lot are due by May 21, 2026, while timelines for the other districts are also set under the phased bidding plan.
Once implemented, the initiative is expected to provide affordable, high-speed internet access to thousands of users, helping bridge the digital gap and improve access to online services across these districts.
