The Punjab government has decided to launch a free public transport service in different cities, with budget approval granted for running 1,000 buses under the plan.
Under the project, citizens will be provided free travel for one month in a move aimed at easing the burden of rising transport costs.
Sources said a supplementary grant of Rs. 1.8 billion has also been approved to hire the buses. Under the plan, the Finance Department will release funds on a seven-day advance basis, while private transporters will be paid weekly.
Officials said the Punjab Transport Authority will oversee the project and prepare a complete record of payments and operations afterward. Regional Transport Authorities have also been allowed to hire buses directly for the scheme.
According to sources, the duration of the free travel facility could be extended if the model proves successful.
The government expects the move to provide meaningful relief to commuters while also encouraging greater use of public transport in urban areas.
