Microsoft is adding a new Windows Update feature called Cloud-Initiated Driver Recovery, designed to automatically roll back faulty drivers to previously stable versions.
According to a report from PCWorld, the feature is intended to reduce the time users spend dealing with problematic hardware drivers.
How Driver Issues Work Today
Currently, when a faulty driver causes problems, hardware manufacturers are responsible for releasing an updated driver.
In some cases, users must manually uninstall the problematic driver themselves.
Microsoft said this process can leave systems running unstable or with low-quality drivers for extended periods.
Automatic Rollback System
With Cloud-Initiated Driver Recovery, Microsoft will be able to remotely trigger a rollback through the Windows Update system.
The feature will automatically restore affected systems to a previously known good driver version.
The process is designed to reduce dependency on manual troubleshooting or waiting for hardware partners to release fixes.
Release Timeline
Microsoft said testing and verification for the feature will continue through August.
The company aims to begin rolling out Cloud-Initiated Driver Recovery to Windows PCs starting in September.
