Section of a Major Bridge in Sindh Collapses During Construction

A section of the under-construction Kandhkot-Ghotki Bridge in Sindh collapsed while workers were trying to fix it into place.

According to details, the deck was being lifted with cranes so it could be aligned with the rest of the bridge structure. During the process, the section suddenly broke into three pieces and crashed to the ground.

The bridge is being built over the Indus River to connect Kandhkot-Kashmore and Ghotki, two major districts in upper Sindh. Once completed, it is expected to provide a shorter and faster route for daily commuters while also improving the movement of industrial and agricultural goods between the two areas.

The latest collapse comes only months after construction work resumed on the 12-kilometer project following years of disruption.

Work had remained stalled for a long time due to the law and order situation in the region, where engineers, officials, and laborers were frequently exposed to threats, attacks, and kidnappings by dacoit gangs operating from nearby riverine areas.

Construction activities resumed after the Sindh government and security agencies intensified anti-dacoit operations in upper Sindh, improving security conditions and allowing contractors and engineering teams to return to the site.

The project was originally launched in 2018 at an estimated cost of Rs. 17 billion. However, repeated delays and the sharp rise in construction material and labor costs have pushed the total cost to around Rs70 billion.

The collapse is likely to raise new questions about the project’s pace, safety standards, and the additional financial burden caused by years of setbacks.
