xAI’s New Coding Tool is Bulit to Rival Claude and Codex

xAI has launched Grok Build in early beta, bringing its Grok-powered coding agent into the fast-growing market for agentic developer tools.

The company said Grok Build is available first for SuperGrok Heavy subscribers and runs from the terminal. It is designed for professional software engineering and complex coding work.

Leak Appeared Before Launch

Before the official announcement, Grok Build briefly surfaced on the Grok website through a “Grok Computer” button, according to earlier online reports.

The button reportedly allowed users to choose between a Grok computer folder and Google Drive. However, the feature did not work and was removed shortly afterward.

The brief appearance suggested that xAI had already prepared some of the rollout infrastructure before the public launch.

Built For Agentic Coding Workflows

Grok Build is positioned against tools such as Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex desktop app.

The tool focuses on agentic coding workflows instead of a simple chat-first experience. It can work inside a repository, create plans for complex tasks, and show clean diffs after a plan is approved.

Plugins, Skills, and MCP Support

Grok Build supports AGENTS.md files, plugins, hooks, skills, and MCP servers, according to xAI.

The company said users can start Grok Build inside a repository, where it can pick up existing project conventions. It also supports plan mode for multi-step tasks, letting users approve or revise a plan before the agent begins execution.

For larger jobs, Grok Build can also use subagents that work in parallel. xAI said the tool supports worktree integrations and can launch subagents in their own worktrees.

Grok 4.3 Could Power The Experience

The launch comes shortly after xAI introduced Grok 4.3, which the company describes as its latest flagship model.

xAI’s documentation lists Grok 4.3 with text and image support, a 1-million-token context window, function calling, structured outputs, and configurable reasoning.

Early Access Comes First

For now, Grok Build is limited to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers.

Users can install it with a command-line installer and send feedback from inside the CLI. xAI said it will use early beta feedback to improve both the model and the product.
