Microsoft is testing new Windows 11 customization options, including a resizable taskbar, smaller taskbar buttons, and a more configurable Start menu.
The changes are available in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26300.8493, according to BleepingComputer.
With the new build, users can configure the taskbar to use smaller buttons. They can also move the taskbar to the bottom, top, left, or right side of the screen.
Diego Baca, partner director of Microsoft Design, said the ability to move the taskbar to the top or sides of the screen has been one of the most requested features in Windows 11.
He said the small taskbar option gives users smaller icons, a shorter taskbar, and more vertical space for apps. The change does not require a restart or sign out.
Microsoft is also giving users more control over the Start menu. The company is adding options to turn off recommended content and adjust the Start menu size.
Baca said the controls are designed to work together. Users who want a Start menu with only pinned apps can turn off the Recommended and All options. Users who want a full Start menu can leave everything enabled.
However, Microsoft will still keep a list of recently installed apps. The company considers it an important way for users to discover new applications, along with the Microsoft Store.
Microsoft is also improving file relevance in the Start menu. The company plans to change how files appear and how they are ordered so that more relevant items show first.
Users will also be able to hide their name and profile picture from the Start menu.
Microsoft is working on several other Windows 11 changes beyond the taskbar and Start menu.
The company plans to reduce notifications, simplify Windows settings, and reduce the number of reboots required during new PC setup.
Microsoft is also improving Windows search. The goal is to create a more consistent search experience across the Start menu, taskbar, File Explorer, and Settings.
