The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a heatwave alert for May 19 to 26, warning of extremely high temperatures across several parts of Pakistan.
According to the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), severe heatwave conditions are expected in Sindh, South Punjab, and eastern Balochistan, where temperatures may exceed 42 degrees Celsius during the coming days.
The most affected areas in Punjab include Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalnagar, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Sargodha, Lodhran, Khanewal, Vehari, and Lahore.
In Sindh, the alert covers Karachi, Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Khairpur, Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, Naushero Feroze, Kashmore, Tharparkar, Shaheed Benazirabad, Mirpurkhas, and Badin.
The warning also applies to several districts of Balochistan including Turbat, Sibi, Uthal, Jhal Magsi, Dera Murad Jamali, Nasirabad, Jafarabad, Usta Muhammad, Kachhi, Lasbela, and Panjgur.
NDMA advised the public to avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight during peak hours, stay hydrated, and take special care of children, elderly people, and individuals with health conditions.
Separately, the authority also warned of increased risks of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), flash floods, and landslides in northern areas from May 19 to 23 due to rising temperatures.
Sensitive areas include Khurdopin, Ashkoman, Dasu, Shisper, Hunarcho, Gulkin, Darkut, and Arkar valleys. NDMA has directed all concerned departments to remain on alert and ensure precautionary measures for public safety.
