Electricity consumers across Pakistan, including K-Electric users, may receive relief of around Rs. 63.94 billion over three months as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority reviews a quarterly tariff adjustment request for the January-March 2026 period.
Nepra held a public hearing on Tuesday on adjustment petitions filed by power distribution companies, with initial figures indicating a possible reduction of Rs. 1.93 per unit in electricity prices. The regulator is expected to announce its final decision after completing the hearing process and reviewing the submitted data.
According to details shared during the proceedings, the requested adjustments are based on significant cost reductions under several components.
Capacity charges declined by Rs. 36.83 billion during the quarter, while use of system charges and market operation fees fell by Rs. 11.24 billion. A further Rs. 23.51 billion reduction has been sought on account of incremental energy units.
Industry representatives attending the hearing welcomed the expected relief and described it as a positive sign for consumers at a time of continued uncertainty in global energy markets.
Some participants said Pakistan had managed to avoid tariff increases seen in other countries due to local policy measures and urged authorities to continue passing on any savings to consumers in order to support business activity and broader economic stability.
Industrialist Tanveer Bari said the likely cut of Rs. 1.93 per unit was encouraging and called for continued reforms so that efficiency gains in the power sector could benefit consumers more directly.
Stakeholders also pointed to ongoing structural changes in the electricity sector, noting that older power plants are being phased out while new generation capacity is being added.
They observed that Pakistan’s installed electricity generation capacity currently stands at around 45,000 megawatts, while actual generation remains close to 25,000 megawatts, raising concerns over planning, utilization, and demand growth.
Nepra is expected to issue its final determination after completing consultations with stakeholders and evaluating all relevant figures.

1 or 2 rupee reduction is not a big relief.
A rupees 1.93 decrease per unit is not going to ease the burden of the consumers or the citizens of Pakistan as we are called. This summer heat is going to take its toll on all the citizens and therefore, a reduction of at least rupees 30 per unit is warranted.
