Anthropic to Become Profitable for the First Time in Five Years

Anthropic has told investors it expects to deliver its first operating profit in the second quarter, helped by rapid revenue growth and rising demand for its Claude AI products.

The company expects revenue to more than double to about $10.9 billion in the quarter, up from $4.8 billion in the first quarter, the Wall Street Journal reported. Anthropic is also projected to post about $559 million in operating profit for the period.

Growth Could Give Anthropic an Edge

The milestone could give Anthropic a stronger position against OpenAI, its main rival in the AI market.

The reported quarter-over-quarter growth would mark a major shift for a company operating in a sector known for high computing costs and heavy model training expenses.

However, Anthropic may not remain profitable for the full year. The company is still expected to face large computing costs as it expands its AI systems and infrastructure.

Funding Round Includes New Financials

The financial projections were recently shared with investors as part of a funding round.

Anthropic is reportedly close to completing a $30 billion funding round that could value the company at about $900 billion, according to the Financial Times.

The company’s fast growth comes as Claude has gained popularity among professionals, especially for coding, writing, research, and business tasks.

Anthropic Expands Beyond Chatbots

Anthropic has also been working to broaden its customer base.

Earlier this month, the company announced Claude for Small Business, a service designed to connect Claude with tools such as QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, DocuSign, Google Workspace, and Microsoft 365. Anthropic said the service can help with tasks such as payroll planning, month-end closing, sales campaigns, and invoice follow-ups.

The company has also expanded Claude tools for legal users. Reuters reported that Claude customers gained access to Thomson Reuters’ Westlaw Primary Law database and Practical Law guides, while Thomson Reuters also integrated its CoCounsel legal research platform with Claude.

OpenAI IPO Timing Adds Pressure

The Anthropic report came on the same day as reports that OpenAI could soon move toward an IPO.

That timing adds more attention to Anthropic’s financial progress, as investors compare the growth paths of the two leading AI companies.

Anthropic declined to provide further comment.
