The Power Division has issued an urgent public warning against the misuse of electricity bill information and QR codes after reports emerged that individuals were using them on unauthorized platforms for subsidy related registrations and other unverified purposes.
The warning was shared by Joint Secretary and Power Division spokesperson Zafar Ayub on X, alongside a graphic marked “Fake” that appears to mimic an official electricity subsidy registration process.
The spokesperson cautioned consumers against sharing electricity bill QR codes or subsidy related information on any platform other than officially designated government channels.
According to the Power Division, some individuals are attempting to misuse electricity bill data and QR codes to pursue unauthorized and potentially illegal activities. Officials stressed that information linked to electricity subsidies should not be submitted through third party websites, social media posts, paper forms or unofficial digital platforms.
The ministry said such activities are illegal and have already been reported to relevant law enforcement agencies. Authorities warned that consumers seeking government electricity subsidies should remain vigilant and avoid sharing personal information, electricity bill details or QR codes with unverified sources.
The Power Division further advised consumers to rely only on official government communication channels for subsidy related information and registration procedures. Officials emphasized that any request for electricity subsidy information through unofficial means should be treated with caution and reported to the authorities.
The warning comes amid growing efforts to protect consumers from digital fraud and misinformation campaigns targeting government welfare and subsidy programs.
