Leather Market Set to Earn Nearly Rs. 9 Billion Just From Eid Skins

Pakistan collected an estimated 7.5 million animal hides during this year’s Eid al-Adha, with the leather sector expected to generate around Rs. 8.7 billion in economic activity from the annual religious event.

According to industry estimates, the hides include approximately 2.8 million from cows and bulls, 4.3 million from goats, 500,000 from sheep, and about 30,000 from camels.

The latest figures highlight the continued importance of Eid al-Adha for Pakistan’s leather industry, which relies heavily on animal hides collected during the festival as a key source of raw material.

Industry data shows that the number of sacrificial animals in Pakistan has increased by around 17 percent over the past decade, providing a larger supply base for the country’s leather and tanning sector.

The Pakistan Tanners Association recently estimated that around 6.36 million animals were sacrificed during this year’s Eid celebrations, underscoring the scale of the annual economic activity generated by the livestock and leather industries.

Over the past nine years, Pakistan’s leather sector has gradually shifted its focus from exporting raw and semi-processed leather toward higher value-added finished products.

Industry stakeholders say this transition has helped improve export earnings and enhance the competitiveness of Pakistani leather goods in international markets.

According to available industry data, exports of leather-made products have reached approximately $694.2 million, reflecting the growing contribution of value-added leather manufacturing to the country’s export basket.
