FBR to Go After Famous People on Social Media Showing Off Wealthy and Luxurious Lifestyles

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to launch a large-scale crackdown on non-filers who display signs of wealth and luxury lifestyles on social media, with enforcement action expected to begin from October 1, 2026, according to sources.

Sources told ProPakistani that the tax authority has finalized plans to issue notices to individuals who publicly showcase expensive assets, lavish spending, and luxury lifestyles online while remaining outside the tax net or failing to submit tax returns.

Under the proposed enforcement drive, affected individuals will be required to explain the sources of their income and provide details of their assets. Tax authorities will examine whether their declared income matches their apparent lifestyle and spending patterns.

According to sources, the FBR has spent the current fiscal year compiling extensive data on individuals who regularly display wealth on social media platforms. The exercise reportedly involved the collection and analysis of information from multiple sources to identify potential cases of tax non-compliance.

Sources said the National Database and Registration Authority has also assisted the tax authority in verifying identities and obtaining relevant information about targeted individuals. In addition, the FBR has reportedly gathered details relating to banking transactions, credit card usage, ATM activity, and spending patterns of the identified persons.

The collected data will be used to initiate proceedings under applicable tax laws against individuals whose financial activities appear inconsistent with their tax records. Officials believe the exercise will help identify high spending individuals who are either non filers or significantly underreporting their income.

According to sources, individuals currently under review have until September 30, 2026, to file their tax returns and regularize their tax status. After that date, the FBR is expected to begin issuing notices and initiating formal enforcement action against non compliant taxpayers.

The move forms part of broader efforts to expand the country’s tax base, reduce the size of the undocumented economy, and strengthen enforcement of tax laws. Officials believe the use of digital data and social media monitoring will help improve compliance and bring more high income individuals into the formal tax system.
