New Apple intelligence is Not Coming to Most iPhones, Not Even iPhone 17

Apple introduced several new Apple Intelligence features during WWDC 2026, including the new Siri AI.

However, the company’s most advanced on-device AI model will only work on select devices. Apple confirmed that the model requires at least 12GB of unified memory on supported iPad and Mac models.

The advanced on-device model powers some of the new Siri AI features.

Apple said these include more expressive Siri voices and more advanced systemwide dictation. Dictation can capture speech as polished text with improved handling of capitalization, punctuation, and formatting.

Supported iPhones

On iPhone, support is limited to the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The standard iPhone 17 is not included. The model has 8GB of RAM, which is below the requirement for Apple’s most advanced on-device AI features, according to 9to5Mac.

Supported iPads and Macs

For iPad users, the new on-device AI features will be available on iPad models with the M4 chip or later, provided they have at least 12GB of unified memory.

On Mac, the requirement is an M3 chip or later with at least 12GB of unified memory.

Vision Pro Support

Apple Vision Pro with the M5 chip will also support the advanced on-device model.

Apple said the model and expressive Siri voices are available on Vision Pro with M5.

What It Means

The requirement means some Apple Intelligence features will work across a wider range of devices, but the most advanced on-device Siri AI features will be limited to newer hardware.

Users with unsupported iPhone, iPad, and Mac models may still get several Apple Intelligence features, but they will not have access to the most advanced on-device model and the features tied directly to it.
