KP Safe City Project Yet to Become Fully Operational

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s Safe City Project has yet to become fully operational as the legal framework required for its implementation remains pending.

According to government officials, the proposed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Safe City Authority Act has not been approved, creating obstacles to the project’s full functionality. The Safe City Project was inaugurated on March 4, but the legislation needed to support its operations has yet to be enacted.

Officials said police prepared a draft of the proposed law nearly two months ago and submitted it to the Home Department for further processing. The draft will be presented before the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet and later the provincial assembly for approval.

The absence of the legislation has created difficulties in the legal use of evidence collected through cameras installed under the Safe City Project. Authorities are also facing operational challenges in managing the traffic system linked to the project.

Officials said the effective use of the project’s features depends on the completion of the legislative process.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Law Minister Aftab Alam said work on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Safe City Authority Act 2026 is underway. He added that the Law Department and Home Department are jointly finalizing the draft, while efforts are being made to complete the legislative process at the earliest to make the project fully operational.
