President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council Bill 2026 on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, paving the way for a modern legal framework to regulate and strengthen the country’s nursing and midwifery sectors.
According to official sources, the bill aims to improve professional standards, oversight, and governance in nursing and midwifery across Pakistan. The legislation will enable the implementation of updated regulatory mechanisms to enhance the quality of healthcare services and professional training.
Officials said the summary was sent to the Presidency after fulfilling all constitutional requirements. Documents show that the bill received presidential assent on June 4, 2026.
Under the new law, the regulation of nursing and midwifery professions will be aligned with modern requirements. The legislation also introduces measures to strengthen the registration of professionals, training systems, educational standards, and professional oversight mechanisms.
Relevant authorities said the law will promote higher standards, transparency, and accountability in the nursing sector. They added that the reforms are expected to improve healthcare services and support the delivery of quality medical care to patients across the country.
