Punjab Reportedly Imposes Rs. 2,500 Per Toilet Tax on Hospitals

Hospitals in Rahim Yar Khan, Punjab have reportedly started receiving notices for a new sewerage tax under which WASA is charging Rs. 2,500 per toilet.

According to the reported details, the tax is being imposed on commercial properties and has already been billed to multiple medical facilities in the city.

Lala Iqbal Hospital was issued a monthly bill of Rs. 37,500 for 15 toilets. Nasir Medical Complex was sent a bill of Rs. 62,500 for 17 toilets, while Doctor Hospital and Trauma Center was billed Rs. 12,500. A private surgical hospital was also served notices under the same rate.

The move is being described locally as a “toilet tax” because the amount is being calculated on the basis of the number of toilets in each facility.

Reports also claimed that an FIR was registered against a private surgical clinic for not paying the tax.

WASA Deputy Director Amir Naveed said the levy is actually a sewerage tax and not a separate toilet tax. He said the measure has been approved by the cabinet and is meant for commercial areas.

According to him, the tax is being sent to institutions that create more waste and put a greater burden on the sewerage system.
