Government universities across the country have been directed to introduce a mandatory 3-credit-hour artificial intelligence (AI) course in relevant degree programs.
The course, titled “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence,” will be added to university curricula in line with the Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) advisory. The decision was also endorsed at a consultative meeting of vice-chancellors.
According to officials, the course will be rolled out in phases across relevant degree programs. Universities have been instructed to make it part of their curricula immediately under HEC policy.
Information Technology University, Lahore, has prepared three proposed modules for the course. Their outlines were approved at the 45th HEC meeting and have now been shared with all public-sector universities.
A formal letter has also been issued to all public universities in Punjab to promote AI education across higher education institutions.
Officials said the move aims to equip students with future-ready digital skills and give AI a central role in higher education policy.
