Anthropic has introduced Claude Tag, an AI agent that operates within Slack and works alongside teams, leveraging shared workplace context.
Users can mention @Claude in a channel to request information or assign a task. The feature is entering beta for Claude Team and Enterprise customers.
Unlike earlier Claude integrations, Claude Tag can retain relevant information from channel discussions, use approved workplace tools, and proactively follow up on unfinished work.
How It Works
Claude Tag builds on Anthropic’s existing Slack integrations.
Users could already send direct messages to Claude or mention it in channels for on-demand assistance. Claude Code in Slack could also turn coding requests into full web-based coding sessions and post progress updates back into the original thread.
Claude Tag adds persistent context and memory. As it follows a channel, it learns more about the work being discussed.
When authorised, it can also collect relevant information from other parts of the organisation.
Shared AI Identity
Everyone in an approved Slack channel works with the same Claude identity.
Team members can see what Claude has completed, continue an earlier conversation, and take over from where another employee stopped.
This differs from an AI assistant that operates separately for each user, as Claude Tag’s work remains visible to the wider channel.
Admin Controls
System administrators decide which channels, information, and tools Claude can access.
Each Claude identity remains limited to the channels defined by administrators. A Claude assigned to legal work, for example, cannot carry information or memories into an engineering channel unless it has been given access.
These controls are intended to prevent information from moving between teams without permission.
Task Management
When a user assigns Claude a task, it divides the work into stages and completes them using the tools available to it.
Claude then posts its progress and completed work in a Slack thread, where other channel members can review or continue the task.
The agent can handle work such as data analysis, software development, incident investigation, and tasks involving information stored across the organisation.
Ambient Mode
Claude Tag also includes an ambient mode that allows it to participate without waiting for a direct mention.
It can enter a conversation to provide an update, flag relevant information found elsewhere in the organisation, or follow up on a task or discussion that has been left unfinished.
Anthropic says this approach is intended to make Claude operate more like a colleague whose work and progress remain visible to the team.
Enterprise Context
Workplace context has become an important part of enterprise AI systems. Microsoft uses Graph through Copilot and Work IQ to connect AI tools with organisational information.
Snowflake and Databricks are positioning their platforms as data infrastructure that AI agents can use to access company knowledge.
Glean is also developing an intelligence layer that connects AI models with enterprise data and workplace context.
