US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the United States will use Iran’s unfrozen assets under its control to purchase food from American farmers and ranchers for shipment to Iran. He insists that no money is being handed directly to Tehran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said food is “desperately needed” in Iran and that the US would release some Iranian funds to buy American agricultural products, including corn, wheat, soybeans, and other food items.
“Food is desperately needed in Iran, and we will be purchasing it for them exclusively from the United States,” Trump wrote.
The president also rejected reports that Iran is charging ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Trump, Iran has informed the United States that there are “no tolls, no insurance costs, and no other charges of any kind” being imposed on vessels using the strategic shipping route.
He accused “Fake News” outlets of reporting otherwise and warned that if Iran’s assurances prove false, negotiations between Washington and Tehran would end immediately.
Trump further denied claims that the United States has given money to Iran or released funds directly to the Iranian government, reiterating that any released funds would instead be used to purchase US agricultural products for humanitarian purposes.
