Police have registered a case against unidentified suspects after a drone carrying around five kilograms of heroin crashed in a residential area of Narang Mandi in Muridke Tehsil of Sheikhupura District, Punjab.
According to police, the drone reportedly went down due to the heavy weight of the narcotics, prompting an immediate response and investigation.
Sheikhupura District Police Officer Bilal Zafar Sheikh said police were alerted after a drone fell on the roof of a house within the limits of Narang Police Station. Officers reached the site, took the drone and the seized drugs into custody, and cordoned off the area.
During the initial inquiry, police found a black drone measuring around three feet in length on the roof of a house in Mohalla Rafiqabad. Officials said a packet wrapped in yellow tape with reflective lights was recovered from inside the drone.
Police said the packet contained approximately 5kg of heroin.
Following the recovery, patrolling in the area was intensified while investigators began working to trace those behind the operation.
The DPO said it is not yet clear whether the drone was being used to move drugs across the border or transport them to another destination within the country. He said police are gathering information to identify and arrest the suspects involved.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the use of drones in narcotics smuggling, especially as law enforcement agencies investigate whether the case is linked to a wider drug network operating in the region.
