Deadly European Heatwave Set to Move Towards US During FIFA World Cup 2026

A deadly heatwave that has already caused more than 1,300 deaths across Europe is now being followed by dangerous heat warnings in the United States, raising fresh concerns during the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026.

Weather officials in the US have warned that temperatures in parts of the country could reach around 38°C this week, with the heat expected to build through the Independence Day holiday period. The warning comes as several World Cup host cities enter a crucial stage of the tournament.

The growing heat threat comes just as Europe continues to struggle with a severe and prolonged heatwave. France has recorded nearly 1,000 deaths over the past week, while Spain has reported more than 325. Several European countries have also seen transport disruption as high temperatures continue to strain public infrastructure.

Health officials have repeatedly warned that heat is among the deadliest weather threats, and the same concern is now shifting to North America as the World Cup moves deeper into its knockout rounds.

FIFA had already entered the tournament under pressure over weather planning. The governing body introduced mandatory hydration breaks in every match, while host venues were also expected to activate extra cooling measures where needed.

The ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 has entered its Round of 32 stage with the likes of Canada, Brazil, Paraguay, and Morocco having advanced through to the Round of 16 after knocking out South Africa, Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands respectively.
