OpenClaw App Launches on iPhone and Android—but There’s a Catch

OpenClaw has released official apps for iOS and Android, allowing users to communicate with their AI assistant directly from a smartphone.

The apps also let users approve actions and optionally give OpenClaw access to device features such as the camera, screen, location, photos, contacts, calendar, and reminders.

However, the mobile apps do not operate as complete standalone OpenClaw systems. They must connect to an existing OpenClaw Gateway running on another device.

Mobile Access

Users can pair the app with a private OpenClaw Gateway using a QR code or setup code.

Once connected, they can chat with the assistant, use voice features, review requested actions, and share text, links or media.

The phone then works as a secure node connected to the main OpenClaw installation.

Users can decide which device permissions to grant. Access to features such as the camera, screen, location and contacts is not enabled automatically.

Device Controls

The iOS app supports chat, voice, action approvals, content sharing and device-aware automation.

Users can give it access to the camera, screen, location, photos, contacts, calendar and reminders.

The Android version also supports chat, voice, approvals and device automation, with access to features including the camera, microphone, screen, location, notifications, contacts and calendar.

Some functions depend on the phone’s capabilities, operating-system permissions and whether the app is running in the foreground.

Open-Source Project

OpenClaw is an open-source personal AI assistant that can connect to messaging platforms and other services to complete tasks.

The project is now operated through the OpenClaw Foundation after founder Peter Steinberger joined OpenAI earlier this year.

Steinberger said OpenClaw would remain open-source and independent under the foundation.

OpenAI has provided support and sponsorship for the project, although the companies have not detailed the full arrangement.

Previous Access

Before the official mobile releases, many users communicated with their OpenClaw agents through messaging services such as WhatsApp and Telegram.

The new apps provide direct access to mobile hardware and operating-system features that ordinary chat integrations could not offer.

The iOS launch is also notable because Apple has previously applied strict App Store rules to some AI coding tools that can download or execute code.

The OpenClaw apps are now available through Apple’s App Store and Google Play.
