The Punjab government has decided to inspect beneficiaries of its electric taxi (E-Taxi) scheme after discovering that many recipients are using the subsidized vehicles for personal purposes instead of providing public transport services.
According to the Punjab Transport Department, several beneficiaries have also removed the government-approved branding and design from their electric taxis, violating the terms of the scheme.
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said authorities have complete records of all recipients and will take action against those who failed to use the vehicles as commercial taxis.
He warned that electric taxis found parked for private use instead of operating as public transport could be confiscated.
The provincial government launched the scheme to promote environmentally friendly transport and improve public taxi services.
Under the program, the government provided a subsidy of Rs4 billion and distributed around 1,100 electric taxis on interest-free, easy instalments.
Officials said the inspection aims to ensure the scheme achieves its intended objectives of expanding eco-friendly taxi services and delivering better transport facilities to the public.
