Pakistani Batter Hopeful of Becoming Next Captain

Left-handed opener Imam-ul-Haq has said he is willing to take on the captaincy of Pakistan in any format, describing the opportunity as a dream for any cricketer.

Imam, who has represented Pakistan in 27 Tests, 75 ODIs and two T20Is since making his international debut in 2017, spoke about his leadership experience while addressing the possibility of captaining the national side. He said he has been leading teams in domestic cricket for the past two to three years.

“Captaining Pakistan in any format is a great opportunity and a dream for any player,” Imam said during an interview with a local news outlet on the sidelines of the final day of the NCA Red-Ball Camp in Lahore.

“I’ve been captaining in domestic cricket for the past two to three years. If such an opportunity comes my way, I will definitely consider it,” he added.

Although Imam has played for Pakistan across all three formats, he is currently a regular member of the national Test side. His most recent international appearance came in the first match of the away Test series against Bangladesh in May this year.

His latest ODI appearance came last year against New Zealand, while he last played a T20I for Pakistan in 2019, the same year he made his debut in the shortest format.

The Pakistan Cricket Board announced a major overhaul of its player contracting structure last month, shifting to a format-specific model based on five separate player tracks. However, Imam said he has not prioritized one format over another and remains focused on performing in all three formats.

“I’m not giving priority to any single format. I want to perform across all formats. All three formats are my priority,” he said.
