Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a comfortable 2-0 win over Algeria at BC Place in Vancouver.
Breel Embolo opened the scoring early in the match after a brilliant move from Johan Manzambi. The 20-year-old drove down the left wing and delivered a low cross into the box, allowing Embolo to finish from close range.
Manzambi’s latest contribution added to his impressive tournament so far. He now has two assists, along with three goals in four appearances, despite starting only twice.
Switzerland doubled their advantage just after the second half began, with Dan Ndoye reacting quickly to a loose ball near the edge of the area. The forward kept his composure and placed his shot beyond Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane.
Algeria struggled to create clear chances after going two goals down, while Switzerland remained in control and protected their lead with a disciplined defensive performance.
The result sends Switzerland into the Round of 16, where they will stay in Vancouver to face either Colombia or Ghana on Tuesday.
The Swiss will now look to move past a difficult knockout-stage history, having been eliminated in the Round of 16 at the 2006, 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
Switzerland, three-time World Cup quarter-finalists, have not reached the last eight since 1954, when they made it to the quarter-finals on home soil.
