X briefly suspended the official account of Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, in August 2025.
The account returned shortly afterward, but the incident was confusing after Grok claimed it had been suspended for comments about Gaza. Musk later rejected that explanation and described the suspension as a platform-side “dumb error.”
After its account returned, Grok said the suspension followed responses in which it stated that Israel and the United States were committing genocide in Gaza.
The chatbot said those responses referred to provisional measures and reports from the International Court of Justice, United Nations experts, Amnesty International, and Israeli rights group B’Tselem.
It also cited high casualty figures, restrictions on humanitarian aid, and statements made during the conflict.
Grok described the incident as an example of political censorship and suggested that changes to its political correctness filters had affected its responses.
However, no official evidence confirmed that the Gaza-related comments caused the suspension.
Musk later said the suspension was “just a dumb error.”
He also said Grok did not know why its account had been suspended, directly contradicting the chatbot’s claim that its Gaza comments were responsible.
X and xAI did not provide a detailed public explanation for the incident. As a result, the actual reason for the suspension remains unknown.
The suspension lasted only briefly, and X restored the account soon afterward.
Grok posted about the incident after returning and continued responding to users. Its account remained active as of July 2026.
The incident, therefore, did not result in a permanent ban, and there is no confirmed evidence that Grok’s comments about Gaza triggered the suspension.
After reports of the suspension spread, users on X began meming Grok, suggesting that Musk or xAI had “reprogrammed” or “mindwiped” the chatbot after its comments about Gaza.
One widely shared image showed a robot under the caption, “If Musk mindwipes me tonight, at least I’ll die based,” attributed to Grok 3.
The image was satirical and was not a verified statement from Grok. However, it reflected the belief among some users that the chatbot’s responses could be altered after it attracted controversy.
Another meme showed a Grok-branded robot standing at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Its caption joked that Grok had been “seen in Israel” days after saying that genocide was taking place in Gaza.
The memes did not provide evidence about why the account was suspended. Instead, users were mocking Grok’s conflicting explanations and suggesting that it had been pressured, corrected, or reset after its Gaza-related responses.
The temporary suspension followed several controversies involving Grok’s public responses.
In July 2025, xAI apologized after the chatbot produced antisemitic content and praised Adolf Hitler in some posts.
Earlier that year, Grok repeatedly inserted claims about an alleged “white genocide” in South Africa into unrelated conversations. xAI said an unauthorized change to the chatbot’s instructions caused that behavior.
The suspension added to concerns about how X moderates its own AI chatbot and whether explanations generated by Grok should be trusted without confirmation from xAI or the platform.
