The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has barred Pakistan Telecommunication Mobile Limited (PTML) from launching or modifying any brand name following its merger with Telenor Pakistan until all legal and regulatory formalities are completed.
According to an official letter issued by the PTA on July 2, PTML had sought the regulator’s prior approval to introduce and modify brand names after the amalgamation of PTML and Telenor Pakistan.
Earlier, ProPakistani reported that the merger was transitioning under e&, the UAE-based telecom group formerly known as Etisalat. PTCL Group, in turn, owns PTML.
e& intended to move ahead with the PTML rebranding process. However, its plans have drawn attention with $800 million in outstanding dues still pending. PTA has now blocked the rebranding until all legal requirements are completed.
The regulator directed PTML to notify the PTA once the merger takes legal effect and before launching any new brand, marketing campaign or commercial activity.
PTA further instructed the company not to proceed with any brand launch, modification or promotional campaign until all legal requirements have been fulfilled, including the necessary acknowledgement or notification by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).
The company has also been directed to submit documentary confirmation of the completed legal formalities to the PTA before proceeding further.
The directive follows the Islamabad High Court’s June 24 order approving the amalgamation of PTML and Telenor Pakistan, after which PTML initiated the regulatory process for a new corporate identity.
The merged company is considering replacing the existing Ufone brand with e&, the global brand of PTCL Group’s majority shareholder, as part of its post-merger integration strategy. However, the rebranding cannot proceed until the PTA confirms compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
The PTA’s directive effectively delays any commercial rollout of the proposed brand until the merger process is fully completed.
