Punjab has completed 1,129 roads in just 75 days under the “Sohne Pind, Sohnian Rahwan” program, setting what officials described as a new national record.
The progress was reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, in which officials briefed her on the Communication and Works Department’s road portfolio, fund utilisation, and ongoing infrastructure schemes.
According to the briefing, the completed roads span 1,795 kilometers and were delivered for Rs. 30 billion. Officials said the provincial government has completed 32,000 roads during the chief minister’s tenure.
The meeting was also informed that 6,000 kilometers of roads were developed across Punjab between April and July this year.
Under the Local Roads Program, 1,567 schemes covering 3,400 kilometers are being executed at Rs. 79 billion, with 1,129 schemes already completed.
Officials said the department achieved 99 percent utilization of development funds and saved Rs. 11 billion in road rehabilitation projects. Field teams reportedly worked round the clock in three shifts to complete several schemes ahead of schedule.
Major projects completed so far include the 93.5-kilometer Multan-Vehari Dual Road, the 24-kilometer Faisalabad-Chiniot Dual Road, and the 13-kilometer Tourism Highway Dual Road. The government also said rehabilitation of all 124 flood-affected roads has been completed.
CM Maryam Nawaz also approved the development of six modern service areas under the Punjab Ring Road Authority. The facilities are expected to generate Rs. 500 million annually. She directed officials to make them operational by December and upgrade the Ring Road in line with international standards.
The meeting also cleared 42 new road schemes for the next financial year, along with Rs. 51 billion for new road construction and additional funding for local roads and other infrastructure projects.
The chief minister directed departments to submit a final completion timeline for all roads currently under construction across Punjab. She also ordered proper lane marking on highways and accelerated beautification work at entry and exit points.
