Karachi’s K-IV Water Project Delayed Until 2029

Karachi residents are likely to wait until 2029 for the completion of the long-delayed K-IV water supply project, as federal officials informed a parliamentary committee that legal, coordination, and implementation issues continue to delay the scheme.

The update was shared during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, where officials briefed lawmakers on the project’s progress and the challenges affecting its completion.

According to the briefing, coordination with the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and legal issues related to the augmentation component, which is being implemented by the Sindh government with World Bank assistance, have slowed work on the project.

Officials said the first phase of the K-IV project, which is designed to supply 260 million gallons of water per day (MGD) to Karachi, is now expected to be completed by December 2029.

The revised timeline drew criticism from committee members, who expressed concern over the repeated delays and called for stronger oversight to accelerate the project.

In response, Committee Chairman Syed Abdul Qadir Gilani constituted a special committee, headed by Farhan Chishti, to coordinate with all stakeholders and submit a comprehensive report on the project’s implementation.
