Woman Becomes Jirga Member in Tribal Area for First Time

In a landmark move for gender inclusion in Pakistan’s tribal districts, authorities have appointed a woman to the Dispute Resolution Council (DRC) in Upper South Waziristan for the first time in history.

According to a notification from the Regional Police Officer (RPO) of Dera Ismail Khan, social activist Razia Mehsud has joined the newly formed 17-member council.

The District Police Officer (DPO) of Upper South Waziristan, Arshad Khan, recommended her inclusion to ensure that women’s perspectives are integrated into the local justice system.

Local tribal and social circles have hailed the decision as a significant milestone. They believe Razia Mehsud’s presence will provide women in the region with easier access to justice and a safe platform to report domestic and communal disputes.

Historically, such councils consisted exclusively of male elders, often leaving women’s grievances unaddressed or misunderstood.

Community leaders and activists state that this appointment will boost women’s confidence in law enforcement and administrative processes.

By including a female voice in decision-making, the district administration aims to resolve sensitive conflicts more effectively and promote a culture of fairness and equality across the Waziristan region.
