Lahore’s First Walk-Friendly Area to Open in October

One of Lahore’s most congested areas, Neela Gumbad, is set to be transformed into the city’s first walk-friendly area by October 2026, with the project now 76% complete, according to the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA).

TEPA Chief Engineer Iqrar Hussain said the project began in October 2025 with an estimated cost of Rs. 2.45 billion. Around 78% of the allocated funds have already been utilized, and work remains on track for completion by October 9, 2026.

Located near King Edward Medical University, Punjab University, Anarkali Bazaar, Bicycle Market, Tyre Market, and Bank Square, Neela Gumbad has long struggled with traffic congestion, illegal encroachments, inadequate parking, and vehicle theft.

Under the redevelopment plan, TEPA is constructing a three level underground facility after removing existing shops and structures. The project will feature 374 parking spaces for cars and 790 for motorcycles, while 69 shops will be relocated to the first basement.

The upgraded site will also include pedestrian walkways, a computerized parking management system, CCTV surveillance, modern firefighting equipment, public washrooms, and elevators to improve accessibility and visitor experience.

Once completed, Neela Gumbad is expected to become Lahore’s first dedicated walk friendly area, improving traffic flow while enhancing the experience for shoppers, commuters, and tourists.
