Authorities in Punjab have started action against five government teaching hospitals over the alleged issuance of manual medico-legal certificates and postmortem reports in violation of official instructions and Lahore High Court directions.
According to the report, official records showed that government hospitals generated 4,244 manual MLCs and 283 postmortem reports during the past six to seven months. The matter has led the health secretariat to initiate departmental proceedings against the heads of the institutions involved.
The hospitals named in the matter include Nishtar Hospital Multan, Services Hospital Lahore, Allama Iqbal Teaching Hospital DG Khan, Government Teaching Hospital Sargodha, and Allama Iqbal Memorial Teaching Hospital Sialkot.
The issue reportedly came to light after a manual MLC issued by Services Hospital Lahore in a rape case was presented before the Lahore High Court. The court took notice of the matter and sought records from the health department and hospital management.
As per the reported figures, Services Hospital Lahore issued 680 manual MLCs in six months. Allama Iqbal Teaching Hospital DG Khan generated 768 manual MLCs and 10 postmortem reports, while Government Teaching Hospital Sargodha issued 735 MLCs and 48 postmortem reports.
The report also stated that Allama Iqbal Memorial Teaching Hospital Sialkot issued 1,245 manual MLCs and 43 postmortem reports during the same period. Nishtar Hospital Multan was also named, but separate figures for the hospital were not clearly mentioned in the report.
MLCs and postmortem reports are important legal documents used in police investigations and court proceedings. Any irregularity in their preparation can raise serious concerns about transparency, record-keeping, and the reliability of medico-legal evidence.
